Heading from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, the average journey time is approximately 6 hours to Kuala Kedah Jetty Terminal and 7 hours to Kuala Perlis Jetty Terminal. Don't forget to account for highway tolls, which are estimated to cost RM50 – RM70 each way. 

Once you’ve reached the jetty at Kuala Kedah, ferry ride will take around 2 hours and 15 minutes meanwhile from Kuala Perlis a ferry will take around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The best way when figuring out how to go to Langkawi by bus would be to take the bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Perlis. This is because the bus station in Kuala Perlis is only a few minutes away from the ferry terminal.

How to get to Langkawi by Flight

From Kuala Lumpur 

One of the easiest and fastest ways to travel to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur would be to take a direct flight. There are many direct flights departing daily from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Langkawi International (LGK).

Route from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi

When you’re wondering how to get to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur, here is the rough route: 

If you’re driving or taking the bus, the common route to Kuala Kedah Jetty would be to take the North South Expressway (E1). While on the highway, you’ll have to Exit 177 Expressway via Alor Setar Selatan before following the signboards towards Kuala Kedah Jetty.

The route to Kuala Perlis Jetty from Kuala Lumpur is almost the same except you’ll have to drive up further - roughly an extra 1 hour until Changlun and following the signboards towards to Kuala Perlis Jetty.

 

Route from Penang to Langkawi

There are three main ways to get to Langkawi from Penang: by train, bus, or flight

As of 2020, the direct ferry service from Penang to Langkawi has been suspended until further notice. 

If you wish to travel from Penang to Langkawi, the choice of transportation is either air or if by land, you need to switch using ferry service from Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis jetties.

(a) Train & Ferry 

You can take a KTM Komuter Train from Butterworth to Alor Setar. From the Alor Setar Train Station, take a local bus, taxi, or Grab to the ferry terminal at Kuala Kedah. 

Upon receiving the Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal, you can take the ferry service to Kuah Jetty Terminal in Langkawi. 

(b) Bus & Ferry 

You can also take a bus from Butterworth Bus Terminal to the Kuala Perlis Bus Terminal which is located a few minutes away from the Kuala Perlis Jetty Terminal.

Upon reaching the Kuala Perlis Bus Terminal, you can walk a few minutes to the Kuala Perlis Jetty Terminal. Then, take the ferry service to Kuah Jetty Terminal in Langkawi. 

(c) Flight 

Alternatively, you can take a direct flight from Penang to Langkawi via AirAsia which costs about RM100 to RM300 one-way. This would be the fastest way as it takes around 30 minutes. You can also consider taking Firefly or Malaysia Airlines to travel from Penang to Langkawi.
